RRC's Reilly Wins Southern Open Doubles' Title

Tennis is a game where you play by the Code, a game  rich with tradition and great champions, and where you learn early to how to win and  lose with grace. With only a few champions crowned at each tournament, most tennis player finish each tournament with a loss.

So it is uncommon for a junior player to end his junior career with victories.

Especially so for a player competing at the southern and national level. This happened recently for the Raleigh Racquet Club’s Michael Reilly. Reilly, competing in the Boys 18’s Singles draw in the USTA National Segment “Southern Open” tournament July 9-12, 2011 in Birmingham, AL, powered through the singles draw with compelling wins to reach the semifinals, dropping no more than six games in straight set victories before falling to eventual champion Michael Rinaldi of Florida.

Reilly then won the 3rd place playoff match with a thrilling 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) over a 5-star ranked player in the  final singles match of his junior career. The match was played in 112 degree heat.

Reilly and Rinaldi, the #1  doubles seed,  paired to win the Southern Open Boys 18’s Doubles Title losing a combined 8 games over 4 rounds.

Michael finishes his junior career ranked in the Top 100 players in the US Boys 18s.

He has collected 2 national tournament titles, 2 southern championship titles, 2 southern championship finalists trophies, 2 NC State championships, and has hundreds of  USTA tournament victories.

Reilly, who recently signed his National Letter of Intent in a ceremony at the RRC,  will continue his tennis career at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington in the fall.

Until then, you will find Michael working with the RRC junior tennis players, teaching the skills he learned on the same courts he grew up playing on a few years ago.

Mike’ s dad had a great time traveling the South, going to tournaments, talking tennis, sports, and life  with his son! That’s the biggest win of all. He’ll cherish those times for the rest of his life!
